Portland’s Biketown e-bike rental program expands service into North

The Portland Bureau of Transportation announced that effective Monday, it was expanding the Biketown service area by about 9 square miles, a 25% increase.
The new service area includes portions of several neighborhoods in east Portland, including Hazelwood, Mill Park, Parkrose and Parkrose Heights. The city will also expand service to North Portland’s St. Johns neighborhood and reaches the University of Portland campus.
The expansion takes bike service to neighborhoods with higher concentrations of people of color and with less reliable access to public transportation.
“I’m so glad to see PBOT prioritizing racial equity in expanding access to our bike share system,” said city Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty, who oversees the Transportation Bureau, at a news conference on Monday.
The effort is one of several recent expansion of Biketown service. In September, the city announced that it would offer free membership to the bike-share program for any college student in Portland who qualifies for federal financial aid.
It also started offering an hour of free ride time each day to people enrolled in the “Biketown for All” program, which gives reduced rates to people who qualify for affordable housing, unemployment assistance or other social services.
Biketown started service in Portland in 2016. Nike sponsors the program, which is owned by the Transportation Bureau.
The city owns 1,500 bicycles, which riders can use for one-way trips and then leave at their destination for another rider. In September 2020, Biketown switched to an all-electric fleet and Lyft took over operations for the program.
